Confirmed in Compliance with the National
Standards for U.S. Community Foundations

Welcome to Shiawassee Community Foundation!

The Shiawassee Community Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 public charity offering individuals and institutions a way to give back to their community.  Donations made to the community foundation are accepted in any amount and may be used to either start a new fund or add to an existing fund.  All donations are deductible as a charitable gift for Federal income tax purposes.

The community foundation is governed by a board of directors and is subject to the rules and regulations of the Internal Revenue Service and the State of Michigan.  The community foundation is in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.

The community foundation administers over 75 separate funds.  Each fund has its own purpose determined by the original founder when the fund is first established.  Scholarship and grant amounts vary from year to year.  There are several variables that the community foundation must consider when determining how much to spend annually.  The community foundation must preserve the principal balance of each endowment fund in perpetuity while at the same time generate enough investment income to award grants and scholarships that benefit our county.

Scholarship and grant application forms are available from December 1st to the second Friday in February annually.  Following is a list of ways to obtain an application form:

  • Download from this website under “Fund Information” tab
  • Call the Foundation office at 989-725-1093
  • Email - shiafdn@michonline.net
  • Request by mail to the Shiawassee Community Foundation
Post Office Box 753, Owosso, MI, 48867
  • Pick them up at the Foundation office located at
1350 East Main Street, Suite 206, Owosso, Michigan

Each fund has a separate application form honoring the special person or entity it represents.  Every application is handled individually and is reviewed by selection committees chosen by the original founder of the fund.  If the founder of the fund prefers not to be involved in the selection process, then foundation’s scholarship/grant committee reviews the applications and recommends recipients based on the fund criteria.  The board of directors of the foundation must approve all grant and scholarship recipients recommended by the selection committees.

Scholarship and grant recipients are notified of their awards during the months of May and June.
