The Youth Advisory Council or YAC is the youth grant-making body of the Shiawassee Community Foundation with a permanently endowed youth fund. Their primary focus is serving the youth in our community by addressing issues of concern and importance through grant-making from the revenue earned on the youth endowment fund. Additionally, YAC serves the community by volunteering their time in several community service projects.
YAC’s first got their start in the 1990’s with community foundations, when the W.K. Kellogg Foundation issued a youth challenge as part of the Michigan Community Foundations Youth Project (MCFYP). Since the inception of the Youth Advisory Council at SCF grants totaling $121,625 have been awarded and YAC members have volunteered a countless number of hours to assist several area charitable programs.
The Youth Advisory Council meets monthly during the school year. The meetings usually last about one hour. They discuss many charitable issues in Shiawassee County - including but not limited to volunteer opportunities, reviewing grant applications and listening to grant presentations, deliberate and recommend grant recipients to the board of directors, review YAC best practices and the election of their officers.
